Old is Gold. I keep bringing this famous proverb, whenever people question my love for Hindi songs of yesteryears! Well, this isn’t about movies or songs, but about two of my recent experiences at city’s old five-star hotels that continue to rock even without creating hype in social media. Unlike a lot of new starred hotels where they rock on social media, however, their products are either very average or not up to the mark.
Let’s talk about Eros Hotel, Nehru place. It has been more than 15 years, yet their F&B tops the chart on my list. Their F&B is one of the best and does phenomenal covers. It might not be swanky or display cutting-edge technology or display world-class presentation, but when it comes to taste; it can beat any five-star hotel in the city.
I am very fond of this place as the food is always delicious and not –pretentious. Recently I was at Singh Sahib which I count as one of the finest restaurants when it comes to food from undivided Punjab. Besides this, their food festivals always have an interesting concept which excites the guest.
I visited recently for their new food promotion called taseer-e-hararat at Singh Sahib. What impressed me the most is that the concept is ingredient based and each ingredient has the quality to give you warmth in winters.
I have never attended such food promotions and must say that was highly impressed. The lehsun( garlic) ki kheer was the star of the evening and was loved by everyone.
Each and every ingredient had a specific significance that will keep you warm in winters and make you feel good. All the dishes here are categorised on the basis of ingredients -Kesar (Saffron) Lehsun ( garlic) , Makki ( corn), Laung (cloves), Chillies ( Mirchi), Pistachios ( Pista).
Festival is on till 11th feb. Singh Sahib opens only for dinner. Priced at 1599 PP (excluding taxes)
In the same week, got chance to meet Chef Tarun Dacha at the Pickwicks, the multi-cuisine restaurant of The Claridges. I have been to Claridges earlier too, but not to Pickwicks. It’s old school multi-cuisine restaurant serving excellent European cuisine. Recently, they launched their new menu.
I not only thoroughly enjoyed the food but also got an opportunity to interact with Chef. His knowledge of food, especially Indian cuisine is commendable. Our discussion started with Indian food and he asked us to try some of the new dishes from the menu. The dishes are inspired from old Delhi and have a very distinct flavour.
Try their gosht nihari -the gravy is rich and delicious, the Firdausi qorma, mutton do pyaaza and you will love every bite that you partake. They are different from the food they serve at ‘The Dhaba’. We also tried chicken sizzler and I can tell you that it was one of the best sizzlers I have had in a long time. also got chance to eat caramel custard and couldn’t resist asking for a second helping.
This made me think that even though some places (restaurants) have been running for ages and follow the traditional food, their food continues to be above par and delicious and they enjoy a long list of loyal patronage which in itself is a testimonial of a high standard, quality and great service!
