Myth No. 1: E-cigarettes are more addictive
Don’t believe us? Well, you don’t have to. A study conducted by the Penn State College of Medicine has concluded that users of e-cigarettes are in fact, much less likely to get hooked on nicotine than those who smoke cigarettes. So, it is, in fact, the opposite of addictive. Vaping actually helps users quit smoking.
Myth No. 2: Vaping is more expensive
Disproving this myth doesn’t take more than some simple arithmetic. Buying a pack of cigarettes every day which is a small expense in the short run, adds up as time passes by! Vaping, on the other hand, is an investment. A one-time expense, the only recurring cost involved is that of cartridges. Even if we do take this into consideration, each cartridge easily lasts approximately 250 puffs which is equivalent to 50 cigarettes or 5 packets thereby drastically reducing the average cost of vaping when compared to that of smoking.
Myth No. 3: Vaping causes Popcorn Lung
Critics of e-cigarettes have caused a great furor over the usage of the ingredient diacetyl in e-liquids which is known to cause Popcorn Lung. Dr. Michael Siegel looked at a Harvard study that raised concerns over the diacetyl used and found that the highest levels of exposure to diacetyl vapors were through e-cigarettes, was 239 micrograms. The figures for diacetyl exposure in heavy smokers were found to be over 20,340 micrograms. Need I say more?
Myth No. 4: Non-smokers will pick up vaping
Considering how it has been proven time and again that vaping is an effective way to quit smoking, it sounds counterintuitive to hear that it will cause non-smokers to start smoking! E-cigarettes are a helping hand for smokers to quit, or at least take a step towards holistic growth by switching to a smarter alternative. Adding to that, even if a non-smoker for some reason wanted to experiment with smoking, they would have the option to go for e-cigarettes rather than tobacco which is exponentially worse.
Myth No. 5: E-cigarettes are explosive
This is a problem similar to that of the phones blasting. The culprit here is not the product but its careless handling. If a phone is charged carelessly, it is a machine is bound to have a problem. Does that mean people should stop using phones? No. Rather, it means they should learn how to carefully handle them. The same goes for e-cigarettes. When used safely, e-cigarettes pose no threat of explosion. So be cautious and you are good to go.
Myth No. 6: E-Liquids are dangerous
This is one of the most common myths which stems from the fact that most people are ignorant of what the actual ingredients of e-liquids are. Well, you don’t have to look too far for an answer. The formula for e-liquids is a simple combination of these 3-4 ingredients – propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, natural/artificial food grade flavoring and nicotine (optional).
Each of the ingredients (with the exception of nicotine) is commonly used in cosmetics, foods, and beverages. There’s nothing to worry about as far as they are concerned.
Myth No. 7 They are a Gateway for Teens to Begin Smoking
The widespread myth that e-cigarettes are a gateway to begin smoking is cemented all over the news and social media. Some articles suggest that the essence and packaging of e-cigarettes are enticing to adolescents and teens, but the evidence seems to disagree with this fact. Only a small number of first-time smokers try e-cigarettes. Even if they did, there is no proof that they would progress to heavy traditional smoking as a result of their e-cigarette use.
Myth No. 8: Mixing your own e-cigarette juice is safe
Some e-cigarette users try to mix their own juice to have better control over what they are vaping. While that sounds like a great idea on paper, a lot of precision is required in the mixing of e-juices as far as nicotine levels are concerned. I strongly advise that you leave the science to the experts and just enjoy the vape.
Myth No. 9: Traditional Cigarettes Are Better Because They Have a Filter
Filter on cigarettes was designed to trim down the amount of tar that entered the lungs while smoking. Since e-cigarettes don’t contain tar, there is no need to pass the vapor through a filter in the same manner as traditional cigarettes. Vaping e-cigarettes may perhaps look noticeably akin to smoking cigarettes, but that is where the similarities end. Despite the efforts form anti-tobacco agencies against e-cigarettes make the public believe on the contrary, yet e-cigs are a much smarter alternative to smoking tobacco.
