As we drove into the Namgay Heritage Hotel at Thimphu in Bhutan, I was charmed by the facade and later on the entire hotel which proudly displays the Bhutanese concept of pata which is pine wood hand carved and then hand painted in vibrant colours. I stayed in one of the two heritage suites of the hotel and found it to be opulent. I got the true feel of living in a Bhutanese accommodation, surrounded by luxury right from the intricate wall paintings, carpets complete with tigers and dragons, furnishings and furniture.
Spaciously divided into the living area with writing desk, bedroom and a sitting area, prayer area, powder room and the washroom which has a Jacuzzi, my suite was roomy and comfortable with all the required modern amenities. Namgay Heritage Hotel has 41 rooms which are divided into heritage deluxe, heritage grand deluxe and heritage suites. Since it is located in the heart of Thimphu, all the sightseeing spots are nearby. The dining restaurant is multi cuisine. Popular Bhutanese dishes of hantsey jaju or spinach soup, lhaphu hogay which is a radish salad with cheese, red rice, pork and chicken preparations and batuk which is a breakfast dish are tasty. What I liked was going with the ethos of Bhutan, the male servers were dressed in the traditional costume of Gho while the female servers had worn the Kira.
Namgay also has an altar room and the inhouse elderly care taker happily answered my queries about Bhutanese religious customs and traditions. Compared to other places in Bhutan, the WiFi over here is good and since it is available in all the rooms, guests don’t have to sit in the lobby or head to a cyber café.
I highly recommend taking a dip in the swimming pool which is one of the biggest in Thimphu and then savouring some of the delicious bakes at Thimphu Bakes which is a café attached to the pool. The red velvet cake, almond tart topped with ice cream, plain butter croissants fresh from the oven and carrot cake were so yummy that I ended up spending a good amount of time here. The Mediterranean blue and white ambience of the café is also inviting with wrought iron chairs, glass bottle planters and natural light from the glass roof.
The heritage spa with its amazing reflexology and Swedish massage, salon which offers varied hair treatments and facials, steam, sauna and gym are popular with guests. The conference room of Namgay can seat 400 guests without banquet tables. The next day as I was heading to the lobby, I noticed the handicrafts store of the hotel. The designer’s brand goes by the name of Chimmi House of Design. Having its own inhouse team of weavers, the designs are traditional and have even been gifted for the kids of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Chimmi House of Design has also exhibited at fashion shows all around the world.
