Off and on we talk about experiences; I talk about experiences because I’ve grown to believe them. Neither a psychedelic belief nor one based on duty, but a simple factual belief. Experiences build you and a strange amusing experience made my non vegetarian friend realise the importance of having vegetarian items enlisted in a place known for the former. We were called to review the Flamed Grilled Chicken by Barcelos in Khan Market. And like it usually works pour le poulet; her taste buds, my words.
But it didn’t work out for us that day. The chicken didn’t work out for her or maybe it was just the overcooked ‘peri’ that was a little bitter. The brighter side to it was that the bird was perfectly cooked. Everything was right with the dish probably, apart from the sauce. Writing on behalf of the eater, I’d like to recommend everyone to add the (mild/tangy lemon/supa) peri later to enjoy your meal to the fullest. We did something similar with the stomach saviours, Falafel Pita and Mushroom & Cheese Stuffed Roll. The latter being the first safe of the day. With the country running after rolls and a lot of new concepts coming up, sticking to the basics and mastering it is a generous task by Barcelos. Putting just the right amount of mushrooms, not less, stuffing it with the delicious coleslaw and cheese, lots of it; the roll was a big hit for us (count hits as things we would pay to eat). The second hit was the curd & mayo dip that I really wanted to pack and take home. A humongous bowl of wedges and fries with the dip would’ve sufficed; I didn’t need the other three things we tried.
What I would not recommend at all, is the vegetarian platter. Naive and not a connoisseur, but I would still do the aforementioned. From the stuffed potato being tasteless to the salt marinated broccoli, there was nothing i appreciated. It did look exceptionally tempting, but the taste was the contrary. We managed to finish it, thanks to the curd dip!
The cocktails were not a major disappointment. For someone who’s looking for a tinge of liquor personified by sweet elements of nature, they were quite refreshing. AND they were molecular. Nitrogen’s paving its way fast; from ice creams to drinks, it’s sweeping its customers off their feet (literally). [A marketeer once asked me what I see booming in 2016, and i literally wanted to shout out – NITROGEN!]
We all know the idealisation of the rooster of Barcelos that comes from the story of a dead rooster’s intervention in proving the innocence of a man who had been sentenced to death post false accusation. And we all know the truth of all worlds- to each, his own. It might not be our favourite place, it might not be the best day for barcelos, but it might please someone else. Also, with new outlets coming up in Hauz Khas and Sector 29 Gurgaon, there’s a long way to go for the place known for its colourful burgers.
