Instead of cozily sleeping in my royal room at a palace converted into a luxurious hotel, I am standing near a lake at 6:00 am that too on a Sunday morning. Why? Because this lake is the starting point of the Bhopal Heritage walk where history and culture intermingle with the guts and gumption of the grand begums of Bhopal who reigned for 107 years. As the sun rises behind the Bada Talab next to Bhoja’s Dam which was built by the legendary King Raja Bhoj, its selfie time for the delegates of the Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart (MPTM) 2015.
We explore Kamlapati Mahal, Gauhar Mahal, Shaukat Mahal, Sadar Manzil and Taj-Ul-Masajid which is the largest mosque in Asia and the third largest in the world. I find the past glory of Bhopal illustrious but wonder what the city has to offer to present day leisure seeking travelers. The answer perhaps lies in Chakra Spa at Jehan Numa Retreat. This spa is located in a tranquil setting where you can ‘re-sort’ your mind and body.
The swimming pool adjacent to the spa adds to the soothing ambience. I opt for a Rejuvenate Massage. This is a full body massage based on the Balinese massage technique and is done for an hour. My therapist starts with prone position and uses energized oil to bring that much needed rejuvenation. As she uses her forearm and fist for kneading and knuckling, I feel relaxed. The deep palm strokes help to ease my tension spots and improve circulation. My massage ends with medicated steam that helped to refresh and balance me.
